What is Montessori?

It is a wonderful environment that is designed and adapted to meet the needs of the developing mind and body of a young child.

Through materials and activities that stimulate natural curiosity, children build concentration and work toward independence.

Dr. Montessori found that children learn by doing, and that they become self-disciplined through concentration on purposeful activity.

Different ages and ability levels allow for appropriate modeling of behavior and emulating skills shown by older children.

Over the ideal three-year period, this helps children refine skills and knowledge, and prepares them for the future.

Philosophy

Montessori children have the potential to learn freely through an acquisition of "inner discipline."

Exposure to a logical and ordered progression of tasks, set out in an orderly fashion, challenges and stimulates children through materials.

As children recognize that their own initiative leads to accomplishment, they develop concentration, perseverance, and thoroughness that are truly their own.

They learn to do it themselves. A confident and competent learner in later years stems from this inner challenge established in early childhood.

We must "help the children to help themselves."
